Operation & Maintenance: Entering a New Business Area
TRF Ltd, Port and Yard Division (PYE) in pursuit of the aspirations laid down in Vision 2013, has decided to venture into a new business area. The PYE division received its first order from Tata Power for the operation of a Stacker Reclaimer and associated conveyors, for a period of three years, extendable on mutual consent by another four years.
The Stacker Reclaimer supplied by TRF to Tata Power’s project in Trombay, Mumbai was commissioned in the month of November 2008. It has a capacity of 1500 TPH of stacking and reclaiming of coal of size 50 mm. It has a boom length of 41 meters. Radio Modem communication has been used in this machine, a first in India for such a large Stacker Reclaimer.
While TRF has always maintained its own supplied machineries, it is for the first time, that it will also operate the equipment, supplied by it. Tata Power used to do its own operations and maintenance of major equipment on its own, while subcontracting the maintenance of auxiliaries. But, in this case, it required certain skill set and TRF, with its expertise and experience fitted the bill.
TRF stands to gain considerably from this situation, as there is scope for revenue growth in operations. It would also serve as a learning experience for the company, helping to understand the problems/ shortfalls, faced by its machines, and then improve upon them for future projects.
